The current work aims to address the relationship between tourism and
modern architecture, throughout the study of two emblematic cases in
Chile, that due to their strategic locations both were strongly related to
Argentina. The clear intentions to diffuse tourism nationwide as well as
internationally, led to the construction of two hotels, really close to
Argentina ́s frontier promoting as a consequence binational tourism.
These study cases are: the Portillo Hotel (1944-1949), located on the
central area of the country right over the Andes Mountains, designed by
Martin Lira; and the Thermal Baths of Puyehue Hotel (1937-1944) on the
south region of Chile, designed by the Freitag brothers. Both hotels
proposed a touristic vision that exceeded the national demand and related
them with spectacular natural surroundings which encouraged specific
touristic interest. The formal aspects as well as the materials chosen for
these hotels developed the winter shelter as well as the great thermal
baths hotelstypology.

ER -
