Abstract

The territory of General Pueyrredon was governed by socialism in various periods with alternation between 1919 and 1983. Among these governments, the mayor Lombardo (1963-66) stands out due to the impulse given to education and culture, in particular with the creation of the Municipal School System, with a focus on peripheral neighborhoods.By tracking bibliographic and documentary sources (ordinances, bills, municipal bulletins, newspapers such as El Trabajo -socialist propaganda organ-, interviews with authorities

and Municipal Education Secretariat’s staff, and the study of building plans), this article traces the socialist work in matters of culture and education that led to the creation of its own school system. It also addresses the conflicts between the municipality, the organizations that gathered the educators and the political opposition to the construction of schools and kindergartens.

The school buildings - product of an architecture competition - became a model, revealing new pedagogical ideas. Its architecture, in addition to taking advantage of sunlight, orientations and local materials, sought to highlight the student as the protagonist in a conception of an experimental school-workshop in which each classroom was an unit that contained everything necessary for the development of the educational process.
