Abstract

Things usually are not as they seem. The genesis of modern urbanism in Latin America is not either. A revision of modern urbanism achievements is needed. It is necessary to revise the ups and downs of the discipline throughout the temporal arch from the First World War to the crisis of the seventies if the aim of it is to have a fuller view of the facts, and to reconsider the role played by the overcrowding of the city, the appearence of the consumer society, crisis, slumps and wars, in the reformulation of the city. In the same way it is advisable to specify the coordinates of a urbanism that preferred the certainties of some models belonging to the past to the breaking caprices of the Modernity; and, to sum up, trying to show us some of the urban milestones that flanked the construction of the modern city.
