The Photographic City: Three Approaches to Santiago de Chile, 1930-1945

This article examines three photographic approaches to the city of Santiago de Chile, produced with different purposes and technical resources, and incorporated into the knowledge that it was necessary to have, in the years of greatest transformation of its physical structure. Santiago between 1930 and 1945 is seen by photographers with different orientations and objectives, either from the air, from its hills or from inside its streets and buildings, creating what can be called a photographic city. They are technical records for the formulation of plans and also non-expert professional views on their effects. Photography is scrutinized as a part of the process of division of labor leading to the transformation of the city and, therefore, of the society of which it is the product. As an instrument for the exercise of power, it actively participates both in the diagnoses and proposals, as well as in the verification of their results.
