The Building for the Beneficencia del Meta
Verticality and Modernity in Villavicencio, Colombia during the 1960s

On January 19, 1963, the first recorded public architecture competition in the Colombian Eastern Plains was announced in the newspaper El Tiempo. This competition was for the design of the Beneficencia del Meta building, and the winning entry was submitted by architects Pedro Fernández and Eduardo Castañeda with a high-rise rental building proposal. For the city of Villavicencio in the mid-20th century, this project represented a significant leap toward modern verticality. Based on a thorough review of the available project documents, as well as their organization, description, and detailed analysis, this article demonstrates how the building transformed the urban landscape of the section of the city where it is located, aligning itself with Latin American discourses on height and modernity. This research found that the project subtly integrated certain characteristics of modern architecture into the building's various parts and elements. In summary, the Beneficencia del Meta marked a turning point in the typological and formal evolution of the center of Villavicencio, marking the beginning of a period that would be characterized by the gradual adoption of verticality in the intermediate city.
